Regarding my "important" music posts

As SmokeyB wrote in a comment to a previous post, "since when do critics know anything?" Yeah, I didn't mean to imply that I had some sort of rock-solid faith in the accuracy of the views of mainstream (or otherwise) music critics. Heck, most of the stuff I like is dissed by 99.999999% of everyone (even those in my "scene"), ESPECIALLY music critics. (I can only imagine the smirks as I stand in line to go to the...ahem...Dragonforce show in April. They call their music "extreme power metal." Think Rhapsody (if you are familiar with them) but ever so much more so.

However...I AM interested in hearing records that receive widespread critical acclaim so I can play the "why was this chosen game." Were the reviews based on editorial pressure, payola, street teams, the nature of the self-feeding music critic scene, etc. An intellectual exercise for sure, but there is more to it for me than simply making sure I am up-to-date on trivia so I can sound smart amongst my peers... I've found that I sometimes really like the stuff as well. There is a certain pleasure I get from finding a record I actually like that was also a huge critical success. This is quite rare. Even more rare is when those two elements are augmented by massive sales.

All of these factors do not mean that these records are any "better" than others...it's just kinda neat when these things merge.

As to SmokeyB's question about copyright...perhaps an extended discussion of that later. For now, I'll say this...I bought the Green Day disc at alocal record shop. It is one of four (or so) CD's that I've bought for myself in the past two years. Take that as you will.

I disagree my boy - there can be no "more so" when it comes to Rhapsody. Rhapsody is an entity that can go no further - like a Manowar or a Venom or a Tigertailz or a Nitro within their particular niches.

That being said, Dragonforce does reach the relative realm of ludicrous for ludicrous sake. I'll let you place them in the same neighborhood as Rhapsody, but there can be only one true Hollywood metal master.

and yeah, I'm jealous - if I was there, I'd go with you and likely would wear either my Virgin Steele shirt or my Lefay shirt....

Thing is though, I'm not sure that I'll actually go. I have a hard time paying attention to anything for a few hours at a time, much less a band that plays nothing but variations on "faster, faster, faster, dragons, freedom, dragons, faster, screeching, freedom, dragons, faster."
